In Memory Of
John R. Hackert
1923 - 2014
He was a proud member of "The Greatest Generation" who gave up a career in professional baseball to defend our freedom in World War II with the United States Navy. He continued to serve, and retire, from the US Naval Reserve. He was the first in his family to earn a college degree and went onto a long and successful teaching career with South Colonie Central Schools.
He lived each day with kindness, honor and dignity, and will be deeply missed by family and friends alike.
A devout Catholic, John was a communicant of Christ Our Light Catholic Church, making Colonie his home for 54 years.
He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband of 62 years to the late Rachel Hackert.
John is the devoted father of Denise Hackert- Stoner and her husband, Scott Stoner of Loudonville. He is the loving brother of Genevieve DeForest and the late Donald Hackert. John is the cherished grandfather of Nathan (Lorena) Hilton and Emily (Joseph Wetzel) Rachel Hilton Wetzel. He is the adoring great-grandfather of Mia and Ayden Hilton and Isabella and Greyson Wetzel. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, and his close and dear friends, including Bob Lyons, Leon Eatough and Barbara Kline.
John’s family would like to thank the entire staff with Albany Medical Center Surgical ICU as well as his personal physician Dr. Gary Bakst for all of the care and compassion given to John.
