Xantheppi (Sandra) Galanis, 96, of Guilderland, NY, passed away peacefully at her home on July 1, 2026.
Born May 15, 1930, in Albany, NY, she was the daughter of the late Lazarus and Sevasty Moisides. Sandra was predeceased by her beloved husband, James Galanis.
She was also predeceased by her brother, Theodore Moisides, and son-in law George Kontakos.
Sandra is survived by her brother, Jordan Moisides of Delmar, NY.
Sandra is also survived by her loving daughters, Kathy D’Anna (John) of Annandale, New Jersey, and Stephanie Kontakos (fiancé Dan Carstairs) of Schenectady, NY.
She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: John N. D’Anna (Hilary) of Wayne, PA; James D’Anna and Joseph D’Anna of Annandale, NJ; Valerie Keefer (Alex) of Bethlehem, NY; and Louis Kontakos of Rensselaer, NY. Sandra’s grandchildren were the legatees of her enduring love and devotion.
Her loving legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: John G. D’Anna, Claire D’Anna, Evelyn Keefer, and Georgiana Keefer.
She is also affectionately remembered by her niece Yoanna James; grand-niece Nyarri James; and grand-nephews Hassan James and Lazarus James, all of Towson, MD. She also leaves behind numerous godchildren, dear friends, and neighbors who will remember her with affection.
Sandra devoted her life to her daughters following the untimely passing of her husband, James, carrying herself with quiet strength, dignity, and warmth. She will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family, her gracious spirit, and the deep care she showed to all who knew her.
A faithful servant of Christ and devoted member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, Sandra held her parish close to her heart. She often spoke with reverence of the church’s history, including its relocation from the South Mall site to its present home on Whitehall Road. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life, sustaining her in joy and in trial.
After retiring from the State of NY, Sandra continued her commitment to her church community, serving faithfully for many years as an aide to Teacher Mary in the St. Sophia pre-school program. She took great joy in working with children, many of whom are now parents themselves.
A Greek Orthodox Funeral Service celebrating Sandra's life and faith will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 440 Whitehall Road, Albany, NY. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., immediately followed by the Service of the Resurrection. Upon the conclusion of the service, interment will take place at Graceland Cemetery, 680 Delaware Ave Albany, NY.
In blessed repose, may her memory be eternal.
In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church of Albany, NY or Autism Speaks.
Sandra’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who offered love, support, and kindness throughout her life and during her final days.
