Schenectady- Wynell Johnson, affectionately known to many as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away surrounded by love and cherished memories. Born on May 28, 1954, in Harlem, New York, Wynell lived a life rooted in strength, perseverance, and devotion to family.
Educated in New York City, she attended Cardozo High School and later Job Corps, where she built the foundation for a life of service and hard work. Wynell dedicated more than 20 years of her professional life to the State of New York, retiring from the Capital District Developmental Disabilities services. Her commitment, compassion, and dedication left a lasting impact on the individuals and families she served.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Wynell was known for her impeccable sense of style and her love of shopping for the latest clothing fashions. Whether she was stepping out in a new outfit or helping someone else find just the right look, she carried herself with confidence, flair, and joy.
Wynell also had a remarkable gift for bringing people together. She loved hosting gatherings, parties, and family get‑togethers— moments filled with laughter, good food, and the warmth of her presence. Her home was often the heart of celebration, where memories were made and bonds were strengthened.
Wynell was preceded in love and is survived by her husband, Nicholas Johnson; her daughter, Chairmona Mayo; her Goddaughter’s Regina, Jamesena and Peaches, her brothers, Kenneth Hale and Ronald Pettaway; her cherished grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
Known for her resilience, warmth, fiery spirit, and unwavering love for her family and extended family, Wynell touched countless lives through her kindness, generosity, and determined strength. Her legacy lives on in the lives she nurtured, the work she proudly completed, and the love she so freely gave.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
