Malta-William J. Banks, 65, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2018 with his loving family by his side. William was the son of the late Emerson and Dorothy Banks. William was the devoted husband to Mary (McCallen) Banks. They will be married 45 years this May. William is survived by his children Joshua, Brian (Jon), and Darcy, his grandsons Ian and Kai, his sister Sandra, and his brothers Murray and Scott.
William J. Banks was one of a kind. He loved his family unconditionally, was the proudest Marine there was, and wanted nothing more than to work hard and enjoy life. Growing up in Cortland N.Y. was a source of pride for him and he strived to provide all the same memories that made his childhood special with his own family. Camping, boating, skiing, sports, yardwork, fireworks, campfires; as long as he was with his family, he was happy. He would go out of his way to be sure everyone was taken care of and was as comfortable with someone he just met as his best friend. Whatever he did, he always stood out in his honesty, humbleness, and humor. He put providing for his wife and children above his own needs and wants at all times and never asked for anything in return. His grandkids brought out the best in him-jokester, caretaker, storyteller, memory keeper, protector, mentor. He wanted nothing more than to be a kid with them and live life through their eyes.
Through his life he inspired kindness and happiness wherever he went. From his childhood running wild in Cortland, his service in the Marine Corp, his career as a Parts Manager at Langan Motor Car, the communities at his camp and home, to the countless people he opened his home to and welcomed under his wing, Bill Banks made the world a happier place to be. May we all remember his spirit, carry it with us, and share it with those we know, and will come to know.
A memorial gathering will be held towards the end of the week at a time and place to be determined. Details will be shared via the family in the coming days.
In lieu of flowers and gifts the family requests donations be made to the Center for Disability Services, http://www.cfdsny.org/htmlweb/Giving.html
