Sylvera Nicholson went to her eternal rest on November 6, 2025. She was born on May 22, 1948, in Jamaica, West Indies, to the late Charles and Lynette Dunkley. She was the eighth of ten children.
Sylvera attended Carisbrook Primary School and later worked in Jamaica’s hospitality industry, where her warm and caring spirit touched many. She eventually migrated to the Bahamas to join her sister and nephew, and together they immigrated to the United States in the 1980s. Upon her arrival, Sylvera continued her life of service—first as a housekeeper and later as a beloved nanny—forming lasting bonds with the families she cared for.
Sylvera accepted the Lord in her early twenties in Jamaica and became a faithful member of the Church of God in Christ. After relocating to the United States, she continued her service to God at the WoodyCrest Church of God, where she dedicated herself in many roles, including usher, cook, member of the ladies’ ministry, choir member, and faithful participant in prayer meetings. Sylvera was known for her compassion and outreach to others, often visiting the elderly, the shut-in, and the sick.
Sylvera’s greatest legacy was her unwavering love for people. She expressed this love through her cooking, warm hugs, generous gifts, kind words, nurturing presence, and the thoughtful cards she sent. Her Sunday dinners—whether at home or shared with her church family—were a true reflection of her heart. While she was deeply committed to her family and faith, she also found joy in life’s simple pleasures, including her well-known love for traveling and shopping.
In her later years, Sylvera resided in Florida with her eldest daughter before relocating back to New York three years ago. She lived at Teresian House for the last two years, where she continued to share her joyful spirit, enjoying visits from family, watching Christian television and Hallmark movies, and dining out at local restaurants.
Sylvera was preceded in death by her brothers Whipet, James, and Keith, and her sister Emelyn Clarke.
She is survived by her brother Lynwal; her sisters Kathleen, Sislyn, Melody, and Rachel; and her daughters, Beverly Darling and Sheryl Lewis. She was the cherished grandmother of Nathaniel, Danielle, Joshua, Michelle, Bria, Jaeden, and Maya. Her love and guidance also extended to her great-grandchildren: Elijah, Naomi, and Nathaniel II, as well as a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Sylvera will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend—and above all, as a devoted servant of her Lord. Her life was a testament to grace, service, and love. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will live on in all who were blessed to know her.
She lived, she smiled, she loved, and she was loved. May she rest in Jesus’s arms until we meet again.
