ALBANY – Steven Joseph Misenhimer, 72, of Albany, passed away peacefully at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital on September 9, 2026. Born on July 13, 1954, at Camp Lejeune, NC, he was the son of the late Joy and Margaret Misenhimer.
As a child, after frequently moving around the country with his family to Denver, CO, El Paso, TX and Louisville, KY, Steve’s family settled in Voorheesville, NY in 1967. He graduated from Clayton A. Bouton High School in 1972 and from SUNY Geneseo in 1975.
A lover of music and musical theater, Steve was an accomplished pianist, composer, and lyricist. As a teenager, he played the organ as the accompanist of the youth choir at the First United Methodist Church in Voorheesville. Later, while living in New York City, Steve played in local clubs and one time he was the “warm up act” for Bette Midler at the famous Copacabana. Steve and his beloved partner and husband of 46 years, Jim, were passionate attendees of Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. Steve also taught 7th grade English at St. Columbus Catholic School in Manhattan.
Steve and Jim returned to the Capital Region of New York State in 1992, where he enjoyed a fulfilling 23-year career in sales and management with Premier Agendas. Steve and Jim built a magazine-worthy home in Rensselaerville, NY, complete with a music room designed around their baby grand piano. They loved entertaining family and friends with gourmet six course meals and a piano concert and sing-along after dinner.
Steve was predeceased by his parents and younger sister Leslie Misenhimer Shainline. He is survived by his husband James Leveskas, his brother Michael Misenhimer, sister-in-law Deborah Misenhimer, brother-in-law Michael Shainline, sister-in-law Jacqueline Ruhlman, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
