Roger Benson

Roger Edward Benson, 81, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at Albany Medical Center, surrounded by family and friends. 

Roger was born March 2 1945 in Stamford, Connecticut to the late Edward B. and Ellen L. (Nyden) Benson. Growing up in White Plains, NY, he was an avid member of the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended White Plains High School, graduating in 1963. 

After his Bachelor of Science from SUNY Oswego, Roger attended Purdue University, earning a Master of Science in Biology. Moving to Albany in 1973, Roger worked as a Research Scientist for the NYS Department of Health. His groundbreaking work on bleeding disorders led to several patents and methods of practice still used today. After becoming involved in the Public Employees Federation as a union steward, Roger held numerous positions within the organization before being elected President in 1997. During his unprecedented nine years as President, Roger fought tirelessly for PEF’s fifty thousand members, securing multiple strong contracts. He remained involved in the labor movement for the rest of his life, acting as an inspiration and mentor to many modern leaders.

A passionate car enthusiast, Roger spent many hours meticulously restoring several award winning classic cars. As a lifelong student and scientist, Roger had an insatiable curiosity for life and was an avid reader, particularly on subjects of leadership and American Presidents. He is survived by his sister Marta Benson-Pike, his son Alexander Benson, and his loving companion Marsha Curran. 

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, April 7, from 4:00pm - 7:00pm,at New Comer, 343 New Karner Rd. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 8 at 10:00am at New Comer, followed by interment at Albany Rural Cemetery.
