Listen to Obituary

Cohoes- Richard "Dick" Alan Malchow, 85, of Cohoes, New York, returned to heaven peacefully on the evening of October 14th, 2026. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Richard was the beloved son of the late George Malchow and Claire Malchow, and the devoted husband to Karen Gebhardt Malchow, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brother, William "Billy" Malchow.

In his early career, Richard earned degrees from the Academy of Aeronautics and The Cooper Union. Though an engineer by trade, Richard also found deep fulfillment in teaching as an adjunct professor at the Academy of Aeronautics, HVCC, and NYU. Following his retirement from the New York State Department of Transportation, it was the honor of his life to serve as the First Deputy Commissioner for the NYC Department of Transportation.

Richard and Karen enjoyed the home and family they built together over the course of six decades. In his later years, Richard volunteered extensively at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Delmar, NY. A talented chef and baker, he shared his love of food and ministry with every meal he prepared. Richard was revered as a husband, father, and grandfather, and his presence will be deeply missed.

In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by, and will be greatly missed by, his children Dawn Malchow Jameson (Vincent), Lauren Malchow, and Andrew Malchow. He is also survived by his grandchildren Alex Steciuk (Samantha), Anna Steciuk Spoor (Nick), and Kellan Gunner, as well as his dear friend Margaret Forgione and family. Richard also leaves behind his loving brother Bob Malchow (Carol), his sisters Kathy Malchow and Enid Malchow, and 17 nieces and nephews.

Our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the staff at Schuyler Ridge Residential Healthcare, who lovingly helped to care for Richard in his final days.

Services will be held privately by the family.
