Greenville-Richard A. Christensen, 94, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2016 at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home, Albany. The son of the late Nels and Johanna (Aarstrup) Christensen, Richard was born on May 15, 1922 in Ballston Spa.
Richard grew up on his family's farm on Middleline Road in Ballston Spa. Richard married his wife Joan on May 20, 1951 in St. Adalbert's Church in Schenectady. Together they raised their family first in Schenectady, then later in Round Lake where they lived for over 17 years.
For a short time, Richard worked at General Electric and also Schenectady County Sheriff's as a Deputy. He worked for many years as a painter for Country Club acres in Clifton Park. He also worked for DCG Development Company in Clifton Park.
Richard had a green thumb and had the ability to grow just about anything. He loved to spend his free time in his garden. He also enjoyed woodworking and fishing. He was a long time member of The Round Lake Men's Bowling League.
Richard was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He would do anything for anyone. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Richard was predeceased by his wife of 50 years Joan (Hamburg) Christensen. He is survived by his children: Joseph A. (Sandra) Christensen of Halfmoon, NY and Mary Ann (Robert) Witt of Greenville; his grandchildren: Anissa (Stan) Wood, Joshua (Carrie) Christensen, Johanna Witt and Robert A. Witt; 4 great-grandchildren: Lila and Callie James Christensen, Noah and Cheyenne Wood; his sister Nellie Tranka; his brother-in-law Donald Smith and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Richard was predeceased by his infant son Michael Christensen; his brother Anders (Mary) Christensen; his two sisters: Monetta (Philip) VanTassel and Margaretha (Donald) Smith.
Richard's family wishes to express their gratitude to the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home, especially Ellen, Sonya, Marisa and Colleen for their compassionate and loving care.
Visitation will be held from 4pm to 8pm on Thursday, September 8 at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. A Funeral Service will be held at 10am on Friday, September 9 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Ballston Spa Village Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Richard's name to the Alzheimer's Association, 4 Pine West Plaza #405, Albany, NY 12205.
