Ralph Edward McCann, 74, entered into eternal peace on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, New York.
Born on January 18, 1942, Ralph was the son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth McCann. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers: Fred, James, Samuel, and Robert McCann, Sr.
Ralph graduated Albany High School in 1960, after which he joined and served in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge. Not long after his tour of duty he met and married the former Mattie L. Montgomery, his beloved wife of 47 years. Before long, Ralph and Mattie welcomed the addition of their son Aaron G. McCann to the family.
Following his service in the U.S. Army, Ralph entered Spencer Business School and received a diploma in business. He was then hired by the New York State Police as a Communications Specialist in the Technical Support Unit at the Division Headquarters in Albany, NY, where he completed 42 years of service before his retirement. During this time Ralph was an active member of the Civil Service Employee's Assn. (CSEA) and served for a time as president of the Local 697 NYSP.
Ralph was active in Kiwanis International (Latham) and served for a year as its president. In addition, Governor George L. Pataki awarded Ralph a "Certificate of Appreciation Year 2000" in recognition of outstanding service and dedication toward the successful completion of "New York State's Year 2000 Date Change Initiative."
Among his many achievements, Ralph received a citation from the City of Albany Common Council-2011 "on The Occasion of Black History Month…in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the community."
Wilborn Temple C.O.G.I.C. has been home to Ralph since he was very young. At the time of his passing he was a member of the Deacon Board, and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees. He loved the Lord and dedicated his life to serving others, on his job, in the community, and in his Church. Ralph was loved and respected by many whose lives he has touched and in whose hearts he will always remain. His dedication to his family, friends, co-workers, and his Church family will be his legacy.
In addition to Mattie and Aaron, he leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, too numerous to mention.
Viewing will be on Friday, January 13, 2017 from 9am-10:30am at Wilborn Temple COGIC, 121 Jay Street, Albany, NY 12210. A Home Going Service for Ralph will begin at 10:30am at the Church. Interment will follow in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
Following the service at the cemetery, Ralph's family and friends are invited to return to Wilborn Temple for a repast. Mattie and Aaron would like to be able to greet you, and will take this opportunity to thank you for all you have done for them during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to The Northeast Kidney Foundation, 50 1 New Karner road, Albany, NY 12205
