Peter D. Kelly, who was born August 22, 1951, died March 25 at Albany Medical Center Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Pete fought a courageous fight against a number of health issues with strength, grit and his usual wry sense of humor.
A lifelong resident of the Village of Colonie, Pete was the loving son of the late Mary Frances (Phillippsen) and the late John Frederick Kelly and a fabulous brother to his older sister Paula J. Kelly and his younger sister Jodi (Kelly) Burick. He loved his niece Emma Burick and his cousin Eileen Dooley. His beloved cats, Chase, Clyde and Chloe were constant companions, embodying the deep bond he cherished with animals.
He lived an active, happy and fulfilling life. He graduated from Our Lady of Angels Grammar School, Bishop Gibbons High School and Hudson Valley Community College. Pete spent almost forty years with the New York State Department of Transportation, interrupted only by two years at Colonie Block after he was laid off. He retired to a life of golf, leisure and the enjoyment of a fine meal at the local diners with his different friends.
Pete, an avid and excellent golfer, was a long-time member of Shaker Ridge Country Club. He played quite often and enjoyed the club's social life. One of his memorable golf events was a hole-in-one at Tall Timbers golf course on the 198-yard, 17 hole with a three iron.
He was a prolific reader, especially about American history. The Revolutionary and Civil Wars were among his favorite topics. His love of the Adirondacks was cemented as a construction inspector for NYSDOT Region 1 during the reconstruction of Route 73 for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. He returned there frequently.
Peter was larger than life, incredibly kind and extremely generous. He donated to the Saratoga Battlefield and Hudson Mohawk Humane Society.
