Nunzio J. Cangemi, 73, passed away on March 1, 2026 at Albany Medical Center.
Born on June 24, 1952 in Adrano, Sicily, he was the son of Mario Cangemi and Maria Cangemi (née Catania). He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1955.
Nunzio proudly served in the United States Marine Corps before beginning a long and dedicated career with the Albany Police Department. Over the course of 32 years of service, he rose to the rank of Commander, earning the respect of his colleagues and the community he served.
In his free time, Nunzio enjoyed watching baseball and played softball in his younger years. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling, and in recent years was a member of a bowling league. He loved to travel, especially to casinos and to the beaches of Florida and New England with his wife and family.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mario and Maria Cangemi; his parents-in-law, Nicola and Lillie First; his sister-in-law, Deborah Sickles; and his brother-in-law, Tony Simeone.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary; his daughters, Nicole Paonessa (Tony) and Mary Cangemi; cherished grandchildren, Savannah Mellor, Luca, Bronson, and Lilly Lopez, and Cienzo Paonessa; siblings, Frank Cangemi (Clelia) and Tina Simeone; brothers-in-law, Mark First and James Sickles; as well as nieces and nephews, and cousins both in the United States and in Italy.
Nunzio’s strength, loyalty, and love for his family will be remembered always by those who knew and loved him.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a funeral service to immediately follow, at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
