Newell Calkins

Newell Calkins, 91, of Schenectady NY, passed away in the early morning hours on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at home surrounded by his family.

Newell was one of nine children, born on November 1, 1933. He was the son of the late Lillian Calkins.

After serving time in the military, Newell worked several years for the General Electric as a laborer. He then continued his career working for St. Clare's hospital as supervisor of the housekeeping department, and nights and weekends were spent picking up odd jobs as a painter.

Newell also known as "Mr. C" by family and friends, will fondly be remembered for his dapper appearance, slicked back hair, strong work ethic, attention to minutiae/details, quick wit, sarcasm and a generous heart.

He was a devoted husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Newell is survived by his wife of 40 years, Claudia Calkins, together raising three children, Amy (Jonathan) DePuy, William (Frank) Salerno and Crystal (John) Revels. Daughter Melanie (Jack) Quinn, and four stepchildren, Daniel Calkins, Beverely (Gary) Evans, Kenneth Jones and the late Bryan Jones. As well as several beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Newell found joy spending time with his family, taking his grandchildren for long scenic rides in his caprice classics after he hand washed and waxed them, going out for breakfast paying expert attention to his saltwater fish tanks, correcting grammar, giving pop quiz history lessons, and telling jokes.

Newell shared a special bond with Amy, he would often joke stating she was his daughter, secretary and nurse all rolled into one.

Mr. C will be remembered as a strong brave, stubborn man who loved his family dearly.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, from 12:00pm - 1:30pm with a Funeral Ceremony to begin at 1:30pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie NY 12205.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Hospice or NYS Sheriffs Benevolent Association in Newell's honor.
