Michael Scott

Listen to Obituary

Michael Joseph Scott, of Latham, NY, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on January 28, 2026. He was 80 years old.

Mike was born on July 19, 1945, to Edward and Bertha (Banker) Scott. He lost his mother at just 11 years old and his father when he was 17. The youngest child, Mike lived on his own after his father’s passing.

He married his childhood sweetheart, Florence (Satalino) Scott, and devoted his life to supporting and caring for her and their family. Mike and Florence shared 46 years of marriage before her passing in 2010.

Mike is survived by his sons, Michael Scott (Elizabeth) of Duxbury, MA, and Gregory Scott (Alesha) of Niskayuna, NY; his daughter, Michele Guynup (Brian) of Troy, NY; and his oldest sister, Virginia (Scott) Satalino of Guilderland, NY.

A devoted grandfather and great grandfather, Mike was lovingly known as “Pops” to — Liam, Megan, Jessica, Will, Hannah, Charlie, Viviana, Cameron and Nicholas — each of whom brought him tremendous joy and pride.

Mike’s life plans changed after the death of his father. Rather than go to college, he joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) after graduating high school to support himself. He went on to become a foreman and led construction projects throughout New York State.

Mike was a simple man who never wanted much for himself. He lived for his family and friends and had little interest in the commercial side of society. A devout Catholic, he was steadfast in his faith — regularly having dinner with his Jesuit priest friend and faithfully attending his discussion group meetings. He lived with deep conviction in his principles of honesty, hard work, modesty, and above all, kindness. These were matters he took quite serious, literal and with an unwavering defense.

Outside of his values, Mike didn’t take life — or himself — too seriously. He was always smiling, cracking jokes, teasing, and connecting with those around him.

A talented artist and builder, Mike loved furniture making, woodworking, basket weaving, glassmaking, drawing, and painting — and he especially enjoyed giving his creations as gifts. He raised his children in the small house he grew up in, and as the family expanded, he built an addition himself, working on the construction each night after returning home from his job, ultimately doubling the size of the house.

An avid outdoorsman, Mike loved being outside — backpacking, hiking, bicycling, hunting, fishing, and riding snowmobiles and motorcycles with his sons and family. He built a cottage in the Adirondacks, something he and Florence had long dreamed of, where they could enjoy quiet time together and make lasting family memories.

Most of all, Mike was devoted to his wife. Florence was spirited, loving, and full of conviction. Despite her long illness with lupus, she remained active and had many interests — and Mike happily became “employed” in supporting whatever she was passionate about. Florence loved to cook, make homemade pasta, bake, and create things for others. When her illness progressed, Mike stopped working to care for her full-time until she passed.

Mike’s kindness, humor, and unwavering devotion to family will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
