Michael E. Rankin, 52, of Niskayuna, NY, passed away on February 11, 2026.
Born on August 14, 1973, in Albany, NY, Mike was the beloved son of Alice Kearsing and Michael Rankin. He attended Colonie High School, where his story truly began. In 1990, he met the love of his life, Renate. Their bond was instant and unbreakable, and just one year later they welcomed their daughter, Samantha.
Mike was an accomplished paver by trade, known for his strong work ethic and pride in every job he completed. But his talents went far beyond his profession. He was an artist at heart and a gifted musician who loved playing the drums and writing. Music was part of who he was — he could find a rhythm in anything and brought that same energy and creativity into everyday life.
He found peace in fishing and hunting, and he absolutely adored his dogs. Whether outdoors, behind a drum set, or surrounded by family, Mike lived fully and passionately.
Mike was a strong man whose presence and smile could light up any room. He had a vibrant personality that drew people in and left a lasting impression. His generosity knew no bounds; he was always willing to lend a hand, offer advice, or simply show up when someone needed him. To know Mike was to know loyalty, laughter, and unwavering love.
Above all, Mike was devoted to his family. He was a proud husband, father and grandfather. His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the music he shared, the stories he wrote, and the love he gave so freely.
He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mike is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Renate Rankin, the love of his life and his steadfast partner through every season; his daughter and son in law Samantha Rankin and Lee Chiaro; his two grandsons, Dean Michael and Jack Robert Chiaro; his loving mother, Alice Kearsing. He also leaves behind extended family members, dear friends who became family, and countless others whose lives were forever changed by his strength, humor, generosity, and unmistakable spirit.
Mike is predeceased by the man who raised him, Steven Kearsing, and many other beloved aunts and uncles.
Services will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2026 at 4 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. A get together at the City Squire in Niskayuna will follow.
