Listen to Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished mother, Maureen Smith, who peacefully departed this life on August, 28,2025 at the age of 93. Born on August 17, 1932, in Albany, NY to Melvin and Florence Elliott, Maureen touched the lives and hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Maureen graduated from Albany High School and worked as a contometer for Bell Telephone & Telegraph Co. At the age of 39, Maureen simultaneously pursued a nursing degree while raising her 4 children, graduating top of her class. She worked the entirety of her career for VRM Nursing Home.

Maureen would be the first to say that her greatest accomplishment was that of homemaker. She took great pleasure in fostering a loving, supportive home for her children and grandchildren. Hers was the home where her children’s college roommates flocked to enjoy her homemade fried chicken (and if you were lucky), a cooking lesson to boot. In the neighborhood, she was known for her exceptional baked goods which she was always quick to share. To her grandchildren, “Nana” was the guest of honor at countless tea parties, the biggest cheerleader in acknowledging jobs well done and quick lend an ear when no others would do.

Maureen is survived by her children, Cheryl (Sam) Graham, Milton, Dwain and Stacy, her grandchildren, Michelle, Kamri, Alex, Noah and Lucca. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews along with many dear friends and extended family who will deeply miss her. She was preceded in death by her brothers Sam and Morris Eliott and sisters Joan (Gilbert) Sharpe and Jean Grant.

At Maureen’s request, no services are scheduled. A Celebration of Life planned to take place in the spring of 2026.
