It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Armao Russo, who departed this world on June 9, 2026, after a brief but devastating illness with her son by her side. Born on July 7, 1952, in Albany, NY, Mary was a beacon of warmth, kindness, and unwavering generosity. Her life was a testament to the power of love and community. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Mary was the eldest daughter of the late Gaetano "Guy" and Angelina (Famularo) Armao. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers John and Joseph Armao, and her dear friend Paula Mirabile. She is survived by her devoted son, Mark J. Russo, her loving sister, Angie (Robert) Pavlak, her brother Frank Armao and a niece and nephews. Mary's circle of love extended beyond family; she was blessed with lifelong friendships, including those with Mary (Jerry) Stack and Judy Madelone, as well as close friends Nicolena Barone, Deborah Cioccke, and Robin Marilla.
A proud graduate of Cardinal McCloskey High School in Albany, Mary went on to dedicate forty years of service to NYS OPWDD, retiring in 2010. Her dedication to her work and her colleagues was unparalleled, and she was known for her exceptional professionalism and kindness in every interaction.
Mary's life was a tapestry of compassion and generosity. Her family and friends remember her as someone whose kindness and generosity touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Her spirit of giving was not limited to her personal interactions.
In her final days, Mary was embraced in the compassionate care of the Albany Medical Center MICU and Critical Care Nursing staff. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and thanks to Aima K., Christine M., Eva O., and Grace C., whose kindness and compassion were a source of comfort to Mary and her family during this difficult time.
While we mourn the loss of a remarkable woman, we celebrate the life of Mary Armao Russo—a life filled with love, laughter, and service to others. Her strength and spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched, and her memory will forever be a blessing.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, June 20th at 10:30am at Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell St, Albany, NY 12208. Inurnment will immediately follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, 48 Cemetery Ave, Menands, NY 12204.
