Listen to Obituary

ALBANY-Mark Hernandez, age 65, passed away at Delmar Center for Rehab & Nursing on February 10, 2026.

He was born in New York, New York, the son of the late Galo Hernandez Jr. and Elizabeth Sanchez. Mark worked as a General Contractor for his father's General Contracting business in New York's LES, and for a worldwide moving company in NYC, and in Albany, NY, and for many years for the NYS Dept of Education voter registration.

He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Sanchez, his brother, Galo Hernandez III (Francis), nephews, Galo Hernandez IV, and Alex Hernandez, of Thomaston, ME, his niece, Krystine Hernandez, my son Christoper's (RIP) daughter, Mark's step-daughter, Nicole Ramos, and family, of Schenectady, NY, and step-sister, Ivy Finn (Keith) and family, of New Jersey. He is also survived by an uncle, aunts, nieces, and cousins.

Down in the LES, in NYC, Mark always loved playing music, especially as a DJ, dancing, and, of course, nightclubs, with whom we still consider extended family and friends. He always had a great sense of humor. Mark was a hard worker, like his middle brother, Galo III, and his youngest brother, Christopher (RIP). They learned all of the tools of the trade in the general contracting business early in life. Their father was tough on them when it came to doing the work properly. This also applied to the moving company in NYC, in which their father was a foreman. It paid off, for there was nothing that they couldn't do or build... it continues with his brother, Galo III.

I bought Mark up to Albany, NY, from NYC in 1990, and he was my rock; we had each other's back, no matter what. He has always been a loving, compassionate, and caring son. In 1995, he became disabled due to a lesion in the left frontal lobe of his brain, which left him with right-sided paralysis and other complications. Back then, his prior MD had said he had only 6 months to 2 years to live, for that was what she knew then. Mark beat the odds and lived another 31 years. I would never let him give up. He would drive or travel by public transit buses, if it were too far for him, in his motorized wheelchair. He treasured his somewhat independence. His health at times was like a roller coaster. On Sept. 27th, 2025, I took him to the ER, since he did not want me to call an ambulance, due to the pain in his lower abdomen. For the next five months and 14 days, due to further complications in his health, he lived between the hospital and the Delmar Rehab OT/PT Center. He had just been transferred back to the rehab on Feb. 5th... he was so tired, and so desperately wanted to go home. He tried so hard to be strong, but he was never to see his home again. Now my dear son, Mark, whom I love and miss tremendously, has found a new home with our Lord, his brother, Chris, his father, Galo Jr., his wife, Liz, and the rest of the family and friends, who left before he did... Knowing Mark, I bet he's looking for his turntable.

Mark was a very compassionate friend and caretaker to many of the residents of where he lived at 400 Hudson Ave, for the last 15 years or so, and in turn, they loved him dearly, whether it was his neighbors, management, or staff, who grieve the loss of a true friend.

My dear firstborn son, you will always be loved and missed by me, our family, and yours, and all the friends that you made along the way.
