With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mark Whitney Garrett, 57, of Niskayuna, New York, who left this world on June 10, 2025.
Born and raised in Albany, Mark brought warmth, humor, and a fiercely loyal heart to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mark lived a life marked not by accolades or riches, but by genuine connection and meaningful work. Over the years, he wore many hats professionally, but he found his true calling at the Watervliet Arsenal, where he built not only a career but a community. There, Mark was more than a coworker—he was a mentor, a friend, and a source of strength and laughter. He touched countless lives through his dedication and authenticity.
But above all, Mark’s proudest role was that of father. He is lovingly survived by his daughter, Alaina Garrett, who was the light of his life. Nothing brought him greater joy than watching Alaina play softball—especially behind the plate as catcher. He rarely missed a game, cheering her on with unwavering pride, always the loudest voice of encouragement from the stands. To Mark, those moments weren’t just games—they were memories, milestones, and the truest expressions of his love and pride.
Mark is also survived by Jessica Ackerman and her husband Jeremie, Alaina’s mother and a close and supportive presence in his life; his brother, Todd Garrett and his children Sarah and Christian; his father John Garrett, who instilled in Mark many of the values he carried throughout his life. He also leaves behind many close friends whom he considered family—relationships built on loyalty, laughter, and shared life experiences.
He was predeceased by his beloved mother, Geraldine Garrett, whose love and influence shaped so much of the man he became.
Mark’s favorite pastimes included playing the drums, riding his motorcycle, and watching movies. A gifted and passionate musician, he played in many bands over the years and brought energy, rhythm, and joy to every stage he stepped on. He found peace on the open road with the wind in his face, and a deep comfort in a good film—often quoting his favorites or sharing them with those he loved. Whether it was a classic or a new release, movies gave Mark a way to escape, reflect, and connect.
He was a man of simple pleasures and deep passions. He loved the outdoors, a well-timed joke, and the kind of conversation that lasts late into the night. He had a generous spirit, a big heart, and a laugh that could fill a room. He believed in hard work, honesty, and above all, being there for the people he loved.
Though he is no longer with us, Mark’s spirit will continue to live on in the lives he touched—through shared stories, quiet strength, and the lasting impact of a life well-lived.
Jessica and Alaina would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Christine Tenney and her family for being there with Mark during his fight. Your love, support, and presence made everything easier on us, and for that we are so grateful.
