SELKIRK-Margarete "Oma" Kriete, 91, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2017.
Oma was born on April 21, 1926 in Cologne, Germany.
In 1951, Oma left Germany and came to the US where she earned her GED and began working. It wasn't long before she was swept off her feet by her husband Gerhard, while they were dancing at the German American Club. Together they raised their four children in Selkirk. They were married for 40 years until his passing in 1992. Oma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She always wanted to make sure her family was "happy and healthy". Oma loved music, singing, square dancing, gardening, golf, reading and was a talented harmonica player. Oma will be remembered as a strong German woman, quick witted with a fondness for beer (warm not cold) and pizza.
She was a hard-worker who continued her career at the RCS school district, where she cherished working with children for 39 years until she retired at the age of 79. She received the Prime Time Award honoring NY's most Outstanding Senior Workers. She also continued her love of sewing through part-time work as a seamstress.
She is survived by her children, Melinda (Kim) Burns, Gerald (Sandy) Kriete, Donald (Margaret) Kriete, Ronald (Rebecca) Kriete; grandchildren, Derek (Susie Ritchey) Burns, Killian Burns, Schuyler (Ceen Burlingame) Burns, Austin Kriete, Whitney Kriete and their mother Shelly, Adam (Heather) Kriete, Rachel Kriete; great-grandchildren, Gavin Travis, Selina Kriete, Isvari Kriete and many friends and family.
