Heaven opened its gates for our beautiful mother, grandmama, and great-grandmama in the early hours of August 3, 2026.
Loretta Lewin was born on October 10, 1935, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Though she spent the majority of her life in Upstate New York, she always said her people came from South Dakota. It was with this heartiness that she lived her life: quietly, with determination, and with endless love.
Loretta graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana University in Sioux Falls and later moved to Syracuse, where she lived until family brought her to Albany to be close to her children and grandchildren.
Loretta was a classically trained violinist who loved music, books (especially swashbuckling pirate tales), good food, and a strong cocktail. Spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild, she overflowed with warmth, humor, and love.
Loretta was a gentle soul who spoke and acted with grace and, throughout her life—even in the end—loved learning.
She is survived by her daughters Sheryl Hayes (Lonnie) and Caroline Barrett (Paul); grandchildren Luca, Zoe, and Elliot; and great-granddaughter Frankie.
In honor of our sweet mother, please hug your children, read a book, and drink a Manhattan (and add an extra cherry!) with the people you love.
Our family is very grateful for the love and care Loretta received during the time she lived at Shaker Place in Albany, and the incredible care received from Community Hospice in her time of need. Services will be private.
