BRUNSWICK-Lance R. Turner, of Brunswick, NY, died at home after a brief fight with cancer, surrounded by his family on April 23rd at the age of 70.
Lance is survived by his wife and partner of 38 years, Dorothy O'Hare; his brother, Glenn (Virginia) Turner of Jonesborough, TN; his children, Sheila (Robert Cleary) Turner of Manchester, CT and Christian (Devon) Turner of East Greenbush, NY; his four granddaughters, Ayva and Kendall Turner and Aoife and Niamh Cleary; loving brothers- and sisters-in-law, John (Elizabeth) O'Hare, Mary Ellen (Edward) Cross, Dennis (Barbara) O'Hare, Patricia Casey, Nancy Jensen, James O'Hare, Virginia (Michael) Fisher, and Joseph (Patricia) O'Hare. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews and their families and a host of life-long friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Richard and Edith Mustonen Turner.
Lance was born on March 31, 1945 in Weymouth, MA and later moved to Hoosick Falls, NY. He graduated from Hoosick Falls Central High School in 1963 and SUNY Maritime Academy in Fort Schuyler, NY in 1967 with a degree in meteorology and oceanography. He was commissioned into the Merchant Marines, crossing the Panama Canal, rounding Cape Horn, and sailing the eastern and western seaboards for Texaco. He later moved to the Capital District and worked with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, from which he retired as a budget analyst.
Lance was an avid skier and long-time member of the OC and Albany Ski clubs. A skilled seafarer, his greatest passion was sailing his beloved sailboat, the Yankee Lady, around New England waters with Dottie and his cats. Their favorite place to be anchored was at Block Island, RI. He was also a passionate cook and foodie and a talented woodworker. His last project was remaking his den as a replica of a sailboat's captain's room.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 27, 2015 at Our Lady of Victory Church, 55 North Lake Avenue, Troy. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Lance's life. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to either the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.
