Kim Marie (Stutz) Gurney, Altamont, NY

Kim Marie Gurney, 67, of Altamont, NY pierced the ever-thin veil of being and entered the presence of her God on Tuesday October 27, 2026. The cause of Kim’s too early departure from this physical space was complications of the autoimmune disorder antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Kim had been stricken at home June 22, 2025, suffering multiple bilateral strokes over an extended period of time. The autoimmune disorder had not been previously diagnosed.

Kim was born August 8, 1959 at Albany Medical Center to Alfred and Hildegard (Flemming) Stutz. As a young child, Kim grew up on Orange Street in Albany but the family moved to Loudonville where Kim graduated from Shaker High School in 1977. Kim loved music, dancing, and was heavily involved in the Drama Club at Shaker. Kim enjoyed spending time with friends from Shaker for the rest of her life.

Kim graduated in 1981 from SUNY Plattsburgh with a BS in Marketing. She started her business career as a bank teller in high school and college and then completed the Management Training Program of Kmart in Massachusetts and Maine. Kim moved back to Loudonville in 1983 and was a Department Manager for Macy’s at Colonie Center and later going back to banking at First American Bank at various locations in the Capital District.

In September 1984, Kim married Gardner S. Gurney at Loudonville Community Church. Kim and Gardner lived in Albany and Guilderland before settling in Delanson in 1988 after together clearing land and completing their first of many building projects. Kim and Gardner moved to Altamont in 2010 to help with the care of Kim’s parents

Kim retired from a 20+ year career at the State of New York first with the Department of Labor and then with the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Kim retired as that Department’s Assistant Director of Budget and Finance.

She loved coloring, drawing, painting, and was an incredible artist. She also had a passion for refinishing vintage furniture. She always wanted to be a be a florist but ultimately her talents would come out in her selection of colors inside and outside at her homes. Kim loved being outdoors, birding all over the country, her camp in the Berkshires, walking the seacoasts, working on perennial gardens and rebuilding free standing stone walls that were in disrepair. Kim loved to use local stones as well as using flowers and shrubs from the gardens of her parents, grandparents, and Gardner’s parents.

Kim was member of the Altamont Reformed Church, Seniors Connect at the Guilderland Public Library, the Guilderland Garden Club, and the Guilderland Historical Society.

She was the proud mom of three daughters – Sarah, Rachel, and Caitlin Gurney. Kim put her career on hold to start raising who would become three thoughtful, intelligent, and loving women. Kim was overjoyed with the arrival of grandchildren Corinne Marie McCarthy and Calvin James Roberts.

Kim will certainly be our guardian angel all the days of our lives.

Kim was predeceased by her parents Alfred and Hildegard Stutz, her grandparents Otto and Anna (Haug) Stutz, and Otto and Anna Maria (Helmdorf) Flemming.

She is survived by her husband Gardner S Gurney of Altamont, daughter Sarah Elizabeth Gurney of North Billerica, MA, (Brian Roberts, grandchild Calvin James Roberts), daughter Rachel Mary Gurney of Slingerlands, NY (Joseph McCarthy, grandchild Corinne Marie McCarthy), daughter Caitlin Ann Gurney of Mechanicville, NY (Thomas Waring), sister Karen Bingham of Voorheesville, NY, sister Robin Blais of Averill Park, NY and many nieces, nephews, cousins, her dog Penny Lane, and cat Quinn.

Kim and her family are eternally grateful for the care, support and efforts of The Community Hospice and its many talented and caring staff and volunteers.

In lieu of flowers the family welcomes contributions to a charity of your choice or the Cornell School of Ornithology or The University of Michigan – Health Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) Program. Kim was passionate about animal rescue, pollinators, and perennial native flowers. We hope that you will think of her warmly if you adopt a pet, or when planning your own garden.

Relatives and Friends may call at Altamont Reformed Church, 129 Lincoln Avenue, Altamont NY from 1pm to 2:30 pm Saturday November 14, 2026. A funeral service will begin at approximately 2:30 and gathering time with light snacks will follow.

An internment ceremony for Kim’s cremation will be private as she has requested her ashes be scattered.
