In Loving Memory of Kathleen Smith
Kathleen “Kathy” Smith, née McCoy, entered into eternal life on May 19, 2026, at the age of 75. Born in Oyster Bay, NY, to the late John and Mildred McCoy, Kathy was the sixth of eight children and lived a life filled with kindness, laughter, faith, and devotion to her family. As the matriarch of her family, she created a home filled with love, warmth, and unwavering support.
Kathy worked for Grand Union on Long Island before continuing her career with Trustco Bank, where she served as a Branch Manager. She met the love of her life, James David Smith, in 1985, and the couple married on Long Island in 1987 before building their life and raising their family in Albany.
Her greatest joy was being a devoted wife, mother, and “Nanny.” She poured her heart into raising her four children — Shaun, Daniel, James, and Caitlin — with compassion, strength, humor, and unconditional love. She was especially proud of her son Shaun’s service in the United States Navy, a source of immense pride for her and the entire family. Throughout the years, Kathy could often be found sitting beside the ballfield in her lawn chair with a scorebook in hand, faithfully supporting her children at countless games. She later found that same joy in watching her grandchildren grow.
Kathy will be remembered for her infectious laugh, bright blue eyes, gentle spirit, and her gift for making everyone feel welcome and loved. She enjoyed gardening, especially tending to her roses and tulips, collecting Precious Moments and Thomas Kinkade pieces, crocheting, and spending time with family at Cherry Valley Campground, where many cherished memories were made over the years. She loved watching reality television, especially Dancing with the Stars and Big Brother, rooting passionately for the Yankees and Giants, and never passing up Villa Italia’s rum cake.
She also held a special love for animals and found comfort in cardinals, her favorite bird. Her family takes peace in imagining beloved pets Brayden and Trinity waiting to reunite with her once again at the Rainbow Bridge.
Kathy is survived by her beloved husband of 39 years, Jim; cherished children Shaun McCoy (Michelle), Daniel (Jessica), James (Kelly), and Caitlin; treasured grandchildren Avery, Madison, Ayden, Ethan, Eva, Peyton, Roman, Jimmy, Trevor, and Bryce; sister Mildred Olinsky; and sister-in-law Karen McCoy.
She was predeceased by her parents and siblings John McCoy, Geraldine Fleischer, Maureen Tomey, Dennis McCoy, Jacqueline McCoy, and Barbara McCoy.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY 12205.
