Judith Grose-Johnson

August 22, 1939 — June 15, 2025

Judith Grose-Johnson, passed away on June 15, 2025, following a brief illness.

Judith was born on August 22, 1939, the daughter of the late John Lewis Grose and Barbara Houston Grose.

Judith attended Smith College, but would later graduate from Hofstra College, and was a talented artist and crafter. She was an avid animal lover her entire life, from goats to guinea pigs, cats, birds, dogs and all kinds of wildlife. Her favorite place was the Adirondacks, particularly the Forestport area. She was generous to a fault, kind and compassionate, with a career as a caregiver (Rosewood Gardens, Good Samaritan Nursing Home, later as a CNA, and ultimately taking care of her father until his death (while also volunteering at the Junior League of Long Island and Garveys Point Museum). In the Capital District, in addition to North Country, she also volunteered (well into her “retirement”) for many local organizations including the League of Women Voters, Clarksville Community Church (Reformed) and Onesquethaw Volunteer Fire Company (with 35 years of service). She could also be stubborn, forgiving, and sometimes displayed a wicked sense of humor. She truly lived a life of service, even helping care for her ex-husband, Steven Eugene Johnson until his death of pancreatic cancer in 2017.

In addition to her parents, Judith was predeceased by her brother, John; and son, Frank.

She is survived by her two loving children, Carol Snead Johnson and Eric Oscar Johnson, an amazing daughter in law, Sharon Bautista Johnson, a wonderful son in law Joseph Matturro, two brilliant and beautiful granddaughters, Isabella Eara Johnson and Jacques Brielle Johnson and a brother, Peter Grose (Janet) as well as dozens of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at Albany Medical Center for their compassionate care of Judith during her brief illness.

At Judith's request, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Donations can be made to North Country Wild Care, as a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, Judith was a long-term volunteer. Alternately, please donate to your local animal rescue organization.
