COLONIE – John “Ed” Powell, 84, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at Albany Medical Center. Born in Queens, he was the son of the late Katherine Nikol and John Edward Powell Sr.

Ed was a teacher at Lansingburgh in Troy for 34 years and Academy of the Holy Names in Albany for 8 years. In his free time, he enjoyed creative, hands-on problem solving, spending time at Saratoga Lake, and being with his family and friends. He was a devout Christian and worshiped at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Delmar and Zion Lutheran Church in Schenectady.

Ed is predeceased by his loving wife, Mary Jane Powell of 48 years. Ed is survived by his daughters Hilary Powell, Stacey Kipp and Christine (Peter) Lilholt; grandchildren Sarah (Fletcher) Dix, Jessica (Celine) Kipp, Justin Kipp, and Michael (Jenna) Lilholt; great-grandchildren Evelyn and Caleb Dix.

Calling hours will be held on Monday February 23, 2026, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY 12205. 

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at 10:00 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church 85 Elm Ave, Delmar, NY 12054.
