John R. Hoffman

On Thursday September 3, 2026, John R. Hoffman passed away in the early morning hours five days shy of his 82 birthday. Born in Troy, NY on September 8, 1944, he was the son of the late George W. and Mary Helen (Zeh) Hoffman and grew up in the Port Schyler section of Watervliet.

He is survived by his loving wife Barbara A. (Russman) Hoffman and his sister Judith O'Brien (late Carl). Also, brothers-in-law Robert Russman, Richard Russman (Susan) and sister-in-law Jean Russman, nephews and nieces Mark Russman (Amanda), Timothy Russman, Amy Phoenix (Chad) and Richard Russman, Jr. (Alicia), plus several great nieces and nephews.He also has a cousin in Indiana.

He attended Maplewood school, CBA, graduated from Watervliet High School in 1962 and graduated from Siena. While going to Siena, he worked as a guard in the Albany County jail. He then worked in Matawan State Hospital as a social worker and retired from NYS Dept. Of Social Services.

John loved playing golf (won several tournaments and got five holes in one), going fishing and playing racquet ball. He was great at trivia and faithfully watched Jeopardy. He hated the winter, so spent several months in his condo in Sebring, Florida to play golf. He always described the sky as a giant blue bowl.

Over the years we have had many fur babies (favorites Anne Mae and Simon) and current ones Bodhi, Heidi, Toro, Stalker and Bugsy.

Services for John will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, NY on Monday September 28, 2026 from 12 pm to 2 pm. From there burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery (right across the street).

John will be greatly missed.
