Listen to Obituary

Colonie -John Fetsko Sr., 102, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, just shy of his 103rd birthday, with comforting prayers of the rosary being spoken at his bedside as he gently slipped away.

Born on June 24, 1923, in Marianna, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Steve and Ann Fetsko. He was also predeceased by several brothers and sisters. John spent much of his early life working as a coal miner before relocating to New York with his beloved wife, Josephine, and their two sons, John Jr. and Geary, in 1961.

After moving to the Capital Region, John built a respected career as a butcher, continuing his work well into retirement at the former Lisha Kill Market as well as Price Chopper and Hannaford supermarkets in Colonie.

A proud World War II veteran, John served in Europe with the 44th Infantry Division of the United States Army. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart in recognition of the courage, dedication, and sacrifice he displayed while serving his country.

John was a hardworking man who took tremendous pride in everything he did. His lawn was the envy of the neighborhood, where he became affectionately known to many as “Mr. John.” Even in recent months, neighbors could count on seeing him out on his daily walks.

A man of deep faith and simple joys, John loved spending time outdoors. He especially enjoyed fishing and hunting, finding peace and happiness with a fishing pole in hand and spending many quiet hours in the woods. He also cherished relaxing in his backyard, watching the clouds drift by and admiring the flowers in Josephine’s beautiful garden. He continued tending his own vegetable garden until just a few years ago.

Above all, John was devoted to his family. He is survived by his sons, John Fetsko Jr. (Gail) and Geary Fetsko (Michelle); his cherished grandchildren, Jennifer Fetsko, Andrew Fetsko (Drea), Lauren Reynolds (Seth), and Danielle Wright (Kevin); and his beloved great-grandchildren, Rileigh, Oliver, Natalie, and Madison.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Lucy Carson and Noreen Coxon whose compassionate care, kindness, and companionship brought comfort to John during the final days of his life.

John will be remembered for his sense of humor, steady presence, strong work ethic, and the countless lives he touched through his generosity and genuine spirit. While he may have cast his final line, the memories he leaves behind will continue to ripple through the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
