John M. Brown

January 24, 1972 — November 12, 2017

South Glens Falls- John M. Brown, 45, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, November 12, 2017.

Born in Glens Falls, he graduated from South Glens Falls High School in 1990, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps the following year. He served with distinction as part of the Marine Corps Security Force Regiment, stationed on Galeta Island, Panama. Afterwards, John returned home to Glens Falls, where he chose to continue a life of service with a career in law enforcement. After earning an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice from Adirondack Community College, he attended the Police Academy and went on to serve many Capital District communities with the Mechanicville Police Department, Altamont Police Department and South Glens Falls Police Department. In 2005, he joined the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office as a Deputy Sheriff, beginning what would become a 12-year career. Among his colleagues—and the countless lives he touched across Saratoga County—John was loved, respected, and known for his deeply human approach to policing, always leading with humor and an infectious smile. Off-duty, he was something of a renaissance man, who loved being outdoors, brewed his own beer, was a creative force in the kitchen, could fix almost anything, played poker and softball, and, later in life, even took up endurance sports, competing in several triathlons and half-marathons.

Above all else, though, John was a loyal friend and committed family man, who loved his wife, Jessica L. Brown (Schick) (whom he frequently said was "the best thing to happen to me"), and was deeply proud of his 2-year-old son, Miles. He was, in many respects, in his prime—he loved being a dad, was excited to be training as a Sheriff's investigator, and was in his best physical shape in years, self-assured and beaming with happiness, and that's how he'll be remembered. Both at work and at home, John was a rock—calm, steady and good-humored, and guided by a sense of duty to those he loved most—and will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. In addition to his wife and son, Miles, John is survived by his father, John J. (Kathy) Brown, his mother, Eleanor (Ross) Loffler, his sister, Deborah J. Bishop, and several beloved step siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins.
