Joan Van Apeldoorn

Joan Van Apeldoorn, 77, of Castleton‑on‑Hudson, passed away on April 21, 2026. Raised by the late Richard Howarth and Henrietta (Van Alstyne) Howarth, Joan will be remembered for her warmth, humor, and the deep love she held for her family.

She is survived by her loving husband, Gary—her best friend and unconditional caregiver— with whom she shared 57 years of marriage. She is also survived by her children Richard, Kirsten (daughter‑in‑law), and Amy; her cherished granddaughters Emily, Lauren, and Megan; and her siblings Karen Lucarelli (Van Alstyne), Patricia Van Alstyne, and William Van Alstyne.

In her early years, she loved boating, camping, and “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” with Richard Simmons. Later in life, she enjoyed trips to the casino, reading Danielle Steel novels, and spending time with her granddaughters, who were the light of her life.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to her entire healthcare team, whose dedication and compassion made an immeasurable difference. Special thanks go to her caring friends at The Spinney and to the devoted Hospice staff who continuously checked in on her and supported her over the past few months. Their kindness, care, and love will never be forgotten.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
