Listen to Obituary

Jeanette “Jet” M. Schmitt, 85, of Niskayuna NY, passed peacefully into glory on August 20, 2025.

Born October 25, 1939, in Wheeling WV, Jeanette was the daughter of Joseph Mack and Helen Teliga Mack. She spent the majority of her lifetime living on both sides of the Ohio River. Prior to her move two years ago to her daughter’s home in NY, she resided in Pleasant City, Ohio.

She began her career at her father’s store, Joe Mack’s, in Benwood, WV. She married her high school sweetheart, Richard Schmitt of Warwood, WV in 1961. Together they built a life of love, family and travel adventures. She devoted her life to her family, making her home a haven for her family. She humbly worked behind the scenes to serve others at her parish and in the neighborhood and beyond. In the 1970’s she became co-owner of Schmitt’s Furniture of Byesville, Ohio. She subsequently worked in sales and design at other local furniture stores. Upon her retirement, she spent her years volunteering at OhioHealth Southeastern Medical Center and visiting her family in New York.

First and foremost, she was a woman known for her great faith. She was never without a word of encouragement from either the scriptures or testimonies from her own life as to how the Lord carried her. She watched Mass daily online, and she also enjoyed watching Grace Fellowship’s services every Sunday. In her younger years, she was a part of the Cursillo Movement, leading several retreats. She loved making her home a joyful place to be, and would decorate every room for the season. She loved cooking for others, often in times of need. Beyond cooking, she also enjoyed her flower gardens and watching the birds and various wildlife who visited her property. She especially enjoyed the swans who made a home in the pond behind her home.

Her greatest joy was her family. She loved her grandchildren and strove to give them all the simple experiences that life had to offer. She never wanted the spotlight, often quietly giving or serving others behind the scenes. She was generous with her time, talents and resources. She had a knack for meeting people where they were. Despite her own pain, she often was found meeting the needs of her fellow patients at the facility she was in before her move. It has been said of her that she could make a new friend in under five minutes. She regarded each person as fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God. She had an amazing sense of humor and would entertain all with her antics. Words seem to fall short of everything she was in this life as she impacted so many throughout the years.

She is survived by her daughters Christina Flaspohler of Niskayuna, NY and Cindy Martino of Reynoldsburg, Ohio and her grandchildren Michael (Kaye) Flaspohler, Erik and Emma Flaspohler. She also is survived by her great grandson Noah Flaspohler.

In addition to her parents, Jeannette was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Mack of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and her sister, Joanna McConnell of Hiawassee, Georgia.
