It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James W. Volk, 78, of Cohoes, NY, on June 19, 2026. James passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

James was born on March 6, 1948, in Troy, NY, to Eva Volk. He grew up in the Capital Region and graduated from Watervliet High School in Watervliet, NY. He went on to lead a life defined by service, dedication, and love for his family and community. A proud veteran of the United States Army, James served as a medic from 1967-1972, stationed at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC. His time in the military exemplified his commitment to helping others and laid the foundation for a lifetime of selflessness.

After his honorable discharge from the Army, James built a successful career working for Ford Motor Company and the Watervliet Arsenal before retiring. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was deeply involved in his community as a life member of the Maplewood Fire Department in Watervliet, NY. Through his service there, he formed lasting friendships and made meaningful contributions to those around him.

James found joy in life's simple pleasures. He cherished daily drives, a good cup of Stewart's coffee, and spent countless hours camping, fishing, and hunting—all of which brought him closer to nature and those he loved the most. Known affectionately as a "MacGyver," James had an incredible knack for fixing things and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. Above all else, he treasured the time spent with his family.

James is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Elizabeth; daughters Linda (Ed), JoAnn (Bill), and Debra (Kevin); grandchildren Brianna (Michael), Meagan, Mackenzie (Corey), William Jr., Alexandra, Austin, and Madison; and great-grandson Peter. He is also survived by his brothers Joseph and William; cousins Brian, Mark, and Paul, and numerous other family members; his longtime friend Joe, and several other buddies. James was predeceased by his mother, Eva Volk Berkery, and granddaughter, Emma.

Those who knew James will remember him for his kindness, unwavering dedication to others, and the countless memories he created with family and friends. His legacy lives on through the love he shared with those around him.

In accordance with James' wishes, services will be private at the convenience of the family.

May his memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
