James Sherman, 75, of Clifton Park, NY passed away unexpectedly on July 18, 2026 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born in Binghamton, NY, Jim lived a life marked by strength, kindness, and devotion to his family.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army. He continued his commitment to service throughout his career working at the United States Military Academy at West Point, the Watervliet Arsenal and New York State DOT from which he retired.
An avid hunter, Jim enjoyed fishing and found great joy in the outdoors and the quiet moments spent in nature. He cherished the time he spent with family and friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Jim was also a gift of life donor. For 53 years, Jim shared a loving marriage with his wife, Barbara (Fiorini) Sherman. Together, they built a family filled with love and cherished memories. Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who took great pride in his family and treasured time with them.
Jim is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Stephanie Russell and her husband, Jason, of Waterford, NY; Andrea Tavares and her husband, Chris, of Ayer, MA; and Phillip Sherman and his wife, Kaitlin, of Fort Myers, FL; his grandchildren, Tori, Bree, JJ, Ethan, Grace, and Olivia; and his sisters, Virginia Laviska, Doris Robinson, and Judy Smey. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family, and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Cleon and Alice Sherman; his brother, Nick Sherman; and his sister, Joan Grover.
Jim will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, dedication to his family and country, and his love of the outdoors. His memory will live on through the many lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Rd., Watervliet on Thursday, July 23, 2026 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. A Blessing will be given beginning at 12 pm. Interment will immediately follow at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville at 1:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to your local food pantry in Jim’s memory.
