James D. Long

March 23, 1931 — September 8, 2016

Colonie- James D. Long, 85, passed away peacefully, Thursday, September 8, 2016. He was the son of the late Benjamin and Gertrude Long. He is predeceased by his wife Veronica J. Long and his daughter Nancy A. Long.

James proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Wounded during the Inchon Landing and Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, James was awarded two Purple Heart Medals. After Korea he served in the Marines as a drill instructor in Parris Island. Following his honorable discharge he married his loving wife Veronica. He then went on to Syracuse University where he received a bachelor's degree in accounting. Upon receiving his degree James went on to work for General Electric in their manager training program. After leaving G.E. he went on to work in the insurance industry and then took the position as bursar at SUNY Oswego. He then transitioned to the Director of Student Loans Service Center at SUNY Central Administration in Albany. James was a proud past commander of North Albany American Legion Post 1610. He also was a member and officer of several veteran groups including; Chosin Few, Marine Corps League, Korean War Veterans Association and the VFW.

James was a dedicated husband and father who enjoyed being involved in his son's activities including watching them play sports. Later in life his love changed to watching his grandsons growing up and playing sports. He was also an avid fan of Syracuse University sports.

James is survived by his sons, Michael J. (Lynne), Gregory M., Martin D. (Sherri) and Brian P. (Suzanne). He is also survived by his grandsons, Christopher, Justin, Connor, Cameron and Trevor.

James is predeceased by his brothers, Frederick Long and Benjamin Long.

The family would like to sincerely thank the nurses and staff at the Stratton VA Medical Center for their excellent care and compassion given to James and the family.

Calling hours will be held Friday, September 16, 2016 from 4:00pm-7:00pm at New Comer Funeral Home. A graveside service with full military honors will be held Monday, September, 19, 2016 at 10:00am at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
