James L. Bowen, 88, of Guilderland, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025 at Our Lady of Mercy Care.

He was born in Cooperstown, NY on June 17, 1937 to the late Lucien and Wilhelmina Bowen.

James was a man of many passions and accomplishments, leaving behind a legacy of love for his children and grandchildren. His contributions to education and the church reflected his deep commitment to nurturing the minds and spirits of those around him. He touched countless lives, not only as a middle school principal guiding young students but also as a Methodist minister offering comfort and wisdom to his congregations in Vermont and NY. He was a Freemason and long-standing member of the Masonic Lodge in Oneonta, NY.

His culinary skills brought joy to family gatherings, where friends and loved ones could share laughter and delicious meals. Jim’s artistic talents allowed him to express his love for the beauty of the world through his paintings and photographs.

Traveling with Ann, he created a treasure trove of memories. Their journeys around the globe enriched their lives and deepened their bond, and Jim carried those memories close to his heart after her passing in 2022.

His barbershop quartet and chorus was more than just a hobby for Jim; it was a source of joy and camaraderie that brought him closer to others who shared his love for music. His infectious enthusiasm inspired those around him.

As he navigated life after losing Ann, Jim leaned on the support of his church family and lifelong friends, who offered companionship and understanding during difficult times. Their presence in his life during the past few months was a testament to the relationships he cultivated throughout the years.

In honoring Jim's memory, donations can be made to the Electricy City Chorus c/o David Barnett, Treasurer, 5019 Juniper Lane, Schenectady, NY 12303 to support Youth Outreach and Scholarships. This will not only commemorate Jim’s love for music but also ensure that future generations have the opportunity to engage in the arts.

James leaves behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by: wife Ann, son James Jr, and sister Nancy.

James is survived by his children, Chris (Vera), Lori and son-in-law Al. Grandchildren, Chris Jr, Nathaniel, Daniel, Tristan and Ashton. Siblings Louise and twin brother John. As well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
