Hugh D. Wallace, 89, passed away peacefully at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, New York on November 29, 2024, after a brief illness.
He was born on October 19, 1935, in Chariton, Iowa, to the late Walter and Margaret Wallace.
Hugh grew up on the family farm near Chariton, Iowa. After graduating from Corydon High School in 1953, he attended Drake University and received a degree in Social Science. After his service in the U.S. Army, he earned a Masters degree in Sociology from the University of Iowa. Following his marriage to Judith Nelson on August 21, 1961 he pursued a career in social work with a focus on youth services. During his career, he worked for the State of Iowa, the State of Vermont Department of Corrections, the New York State Division for Youth, Pius XII School for Boys in Chester, NY, Lincoln Hall in Lincolndale, NY, Good Shepherd Services in Manhattan, and at Family Services Outreach House in Ridgewood, Queens. Hugh was an avid reader and spent many hours exploring his family history. He also enjoyed spending time with family, cooking, painting, listening to music, and gardening. He liked socializing and appreciated the many friendships that he made throughout his life, most recently at the King Thiel Senior Community.
In addition to his parents, Hugh was predeceased by his wife, Judith; sister-in-law Patricia Wallace; and brother-in-law, Dean Nelson.
He is survived by his daughter, Lori Wallace of Latham; his son, Mike Wallace and daughter-in-law Keri Mounce, of Iowa City; his brother, Warren Wallace of Chariton, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Diana Playle of Des Moines and Eileen Nelson of Adel, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
The family extends their gratitude to Albany Stratton VA Medical Center for their care and support.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The New York Public Library.
A private service will be held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
