Gladys, born on May 29, 1941, in the town of Littleton, Maine, peacefully entered eternal rest on September 27, 2026. Her journey through life was marked by an unwavering dedication to education, compassionate service, and the nurturing of deep and lasting relationships.
The beloved daughter of Ralph Craig and Thelma Stairs Craig, Gladys was a beacon of light to her family and friends. She is survived by her cherished wife and partner of 35 years, Dr. Nedra Reed of Albany. Her brother, Loomis Craig, along with his wife Darla Craig of Presque Isle, Maine, were close presences in her life. Gladys also leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom to at least 20 nieces and nephews, each of whom she held close in her heart.
Gladys' academic journey was a testament to her love for learning and literature. After graduating from Eastern Nazarene College in Wollaston, Massachusetts, she pursued her passion for English, earning a Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside. Her career as a professor of English at Russell Sage College in Troy was marked by a profound dedication to her students, whom she inspired until her retirement in 2007. Beyond her professional commitments, Gladys' heart led her to volunteer at Taylor Apartments, where she guided young women in achieving their GEDs, and at a shelter for immigrants in Tucson, Arizona, offering kindness and support to those in need.
A woman of many interests, Gladys' Maine roots were evident in her quick wit, graciousness, and inherent kindness. Her love for reading and travel, especially to historic places, enriched her life and those of her companions. She embraced new experiences, from golfing to trying her hand at pickleball and even snorkeling. Above all, Gladys treasured the moments spent with her family and friends, creating memories filled with laughter and love.
A memorial service to honor Gladys' remarkable life will be held on October 27, 2026. There will be calling hours between 2:30pm and 3:30pm with a "Celebration of Life" at 3:30pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, NY 12205.
