Celebrating the Life and Legacy of George W. Thiessen (May 30, 1916 – May 15, 2025)

George W. Thiessen, a centenarian whose life spanned 108 remarkable years, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, just shy of his 109th birthday. Born in Saratoga, New York, George made his home in the Schenectady area, where he left an indelible mark as an engineer, musician, family man, and community pillar.

A Life Rooted in Faith and Family From the tender age of two, George was a devoted member of State Street Presbyterian Church in Schenectady. His faith journey deepened during his confirmation classes, where the promises he made resonated profoundly, guiding him to live a life of kindness, grace, and service. He served as an organist, pianist, and choir member, sharing his musical gifts well into his 90s. George's love story with Elizabeth "Betty" began on their walks to their respective jobs at General Electric. These walks blossomed into a 68-year marriage filled with shared adventures, including picnics and hikes around Lake George. Together, they raised four children—Walter, Rebecca (Raymond) Scaringe, Peter, and Paul (Theresa)—instilling in them the values of love, integrity, and community.

A Distinguished Career at General Electric A proud Union College graduate, George embarked on a distinguished career as an engineer at General Electric, where he contributed to the design of turbines. His work played a pivotal role in advancing energy technology, reflecting his commitment to innovation and excellence.

A Passion for Music and Storytelling Music was woven into the fabric of George's life. Growing up in a family that often sang together around the piano, he developed a deep appreciation for music. He was a gifted pianist and organist, often playing for church services and singing in the choir. His annual recitation of "The Night Before Christmas" became a cherished family tradition, eagerly anticipated by both grandchildren and adults. Known for his storytelling prowess, George delighted in sharing tales from his youth, including adventurous canoe trips and camping escapades with his father and brother around Lake George. His repertoire of puns and "dad jokes" elicited groans and laughter in equal measure, endearing him to all who knew him.

A Witness to a Century of Change Throughout his 108 years, George witnessed monumental changes—from the advent of crank phones to the era of wrist-worn smart devices, from Model Ts to electric cars. He embraced these advancements with curiosity and wonder, building a radio from crystals and wires in his youth, and later adapting to color television and cell phones.

A Legacy of Love and Dedication George's legacy is one of unwavering love and dedication. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty, and his siblings, Walter and Elizabeth (Betsy) Sydow. He is lovingly remembered by his children, 17 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, second cousins, and many cherished friends. His ability to recall each family member's name and birthday with remarkable accuracy was a testament to his deep familial bonds.
