Voorheesville-George (Skip) Edward Slagen, Jr., 69, passed away suddenly on Tuesday morning January 31, 2017. "Skip" was born in Albany, the son of the late George E. and Elizabeth (Rogers) Slagen of East Greenbush, NY. He graduated from Columbia High School, class of 1965, and earned his Associates Degree in 1985 from SUNY Empire College. He started his Army career in 1965, deploying to Vietnam during the conflict as an Army Intelligence Specialist, and continued serving in the New York Army National Guard rising to the rank of Major, retiring in 1992. Skip graduated from The New York State Police Academy as a NYS Trooper in 1974, and served until his retirement in 1997. He continued his dedication to law enforcement and was a United States Department of Defense Police Lieutenant in Selfridge, Michigan until 2005. Skip was actively involved in Animal Rescue projects with his wife, Barbara and took joy in sharing taking care of the many animals they lived with. He was a devoted husband, father, brother and son. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara Hall, his sons, George E. (Tai) Slagen III (Sherry) of North Greenbush, and Paul T. Slagen (Amy) of Schenectady: his grandchildren Jonah, Caden, Landon and Raya. He is also survived by his siblings, Jim (Juanita), Stephen (Kathleen), Peggy Erfurt (Steve), Mark and Marie.
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Funerals & Cremations, 343 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205, on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 10:00am-12:00pm with a memorial service to immediately follow. Interment will be held at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
