Listen to Obituary

George H. "Sonny" Lloyd, Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 27, 2025 surrounded by his loving family and friends, after a long and courageous battle with kidney failure.

George was born in Washington D.C. and moved to Albany when he was 13 years old. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, JoAnn Lloyd; his parents Rose and George Lloyd, Sr.; his sister, Virginia (James) Foley. He is survived by his devoted daughters, Sandra Lloyd and Christine (Matthew) Mazure; his sister, Maryann (Thomas) King; his cherished grandchildren, Dakota Rice, Sara Mroczkowski, Sean Orner and Nicolas Orner along with many nieces, nephews and Godchildren.

A proud father and grandfather, George's love for his family was immeasurable. His greatest joy came from cheering at hockey and baseball games or watching soccer and basketball for his grandchildren. His role as "Papa" was one he treasured above all else, and his love of life knew no bounds.

George dedicated 37 years of his career as a machinist with General Electric, where he was actively involved in the Local IUE, 301, advocating for and supporting his fellow workers as an Executive Board member and as a Union OSHA representative. Following retirement, he continued to give back as a volunteer firefighter and fire police office with the Waterford-Halfmoon Fire Department, where he was honored as Firefighter of the Year. He also devoted many years to coaching youth as a Little League baseball coach, serving as Jaycee Little League President, and as a CYO basketball coach.

George was a man of many passions. A lifelong Yankees fan and loyal Kansas City Chiefs supporter, he found peace and happiness in the Thousand Islands, especially while at camp, boating and fishing. He loved celebrations, playing card games with family and friends, teaching poker to his friends at his assisted living home, and playing BINGO. His bond with his best friend of 71 years, Vince Matteo, was truly special - whether playing the tables at Rivers Casino, fishing, golfing, or simply enjoying each other's company.

George lived life to the fullest, bringing light and laughter to everyone around him. Even in his final days, he reminded his loved ones that he was leaving this world on his own terms - grateful, content, and at peace, knowing he will soon be reunited with his forever love, Josie, for whom he cared for in her final stages of life, as well as the family members and beloved dogs who passed on before him.

George will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the love he gave, the laughter he shared, and the joy he brought to all who knew him.

Calling hours will be held at New Comer Funerals & Cremations, 181 Troy Schenectady Rd., Watervliet, NY on Monday October 6, 2025 from 10:00 am to 12:00pm. A memorial service will follow the calling hours at 12:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will be private at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, NY.
