Albany- George William Hisgen, 79, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Born on November 28, 1946, in Albany, NY George was the son of the late James and Marie Hisgen. He graduated from Cardinal McCloskey High School in 1965 before beginning a long career as a lineman with Niagara Mohawk, where he worked for more than three decades and formed lifelong friendships.
On May 25, 1974, George married the love of his life, Bernadette "Bernie" Lis, and together they built a wonderful life in Colonie.
George was a quiet, humble man with a generous heart. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, including at the Polish American Citizens Club and Zaloga Post, but his greatest joy came from watching his children and grandchildren grow and celebrating their many accomplishments.
In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Michael Anziano; sister-in-law, Lorraine Fahy; niece, Madeline Foreman; and nephew, Thomas Shelly.
He is survived by his devoted wife of more than 50 years, Bernie, whose unwavering love and tireless care surrounded him throughout his illness; his daughter, Stephanie (Dan Rafferty) of Colonie; his sons, Jim (Emilie) of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, and Bill (Maura) of Latham; his beloved grandchildren, Noelle, Jake, Gavin, Maeve, and Katharine; his sister, Jeanette Anziano; his nephew, James Anziano, who was like a third son to him; special brother-in-law, Robert “Bob” Fahy, along with many cherished brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and his "Ni-Mo" buddies.
The family extends its gratitude to Dr. Danielle Wales for her compassionate care over the years; to the dedicated members of Colonie EMS for their professionalism, kindness, and responsiveness; to Community Hospice for their comfort and support; and to the parish community of St. Pius X, where George was a faithful parishioner for decades.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, 23 Crumitie Road, Loudonville, NY 12211. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated immediately following at 11:00 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Double H Ranch, 97 Hidden Valley Road, Lake Luzerne, NY 12846, or to the Colonie EMS Benevolent Association.
