Genevieve Peters-Zachary

June 1, 1957 — June 9, 2025

Genevieve was born in Newburgh, NY on June 1, 1957, to the late Genevieve (Faye) and Stephen (Peppy) Peters. She was a proud graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, Class of 1975. For over 30 years, she dedicated herself professionally with the same heart and care she poured into her loved ones and community.

She was the matriarch of her family, selfless, loving, and always there when you needed her. Her greatest joy came from being with her people. If she wasn’t hosting a cookout or planning a get-together, she was checking in, showing up, or lending a hand. Family meant everything to her, and she made sure they always felt it.

Genevieve loved deeply and gave freely. Her hugs were healing, her advice was honest, and her door was always open.

She was well known in her community for her commitment to others and her tireless efforts to uplift everyone who crossed her path. Together with her husband, Mike, her best friend and partner in every sense, they poured themselves into making their community better by volunteering, traveling, preparing meals, and supporting children and their families throughout the local sports community. They were a team in life and in service, and their impact stretched far and wide.

As a grandmother, Genevieve was unstoppable. She poured her heart into every game, every phone call, every milestone. There was nothing she wouldn’t do to show up for her grandchildren.

To many, she was more than a mom or grandmother, she was a second mother, a bonus auntie, a sister, and dear friend; Gen was a very safe place. She had that rare gift of making everyone feel seen, loved, and valued.

Genevieve is survived by her loving husband Michael Zachary, her sister Sandra TenEyck, her children Jesse Hyler, Maurissa Hyler, and Duane Martin (Rasheena), 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Genevieve and Stephen Peters, her beloved son Stephen, her brother Stephen, and her brother-in-law John (Big John) TenEyck.

She lived with purpose, gave without limits, and loved with her whole heart. Her legacy is in every life she touched, in every meal she shared, every life lesson passed down, every child she cheered on, and every hug that lingered just a little longer.

She will be deeply missed, but her love lives on in us all.
