It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Garry Lee Wood, who left us peacefully on April 5, 2025 at Albany Medical Center at the age of 69.
He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend, whose strength, resilience, quick wit, and kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Garry is the beloved son of the late Marilyn A. (Swartz) Wood and George R. Wood. He is survived by his sister Sandra L. Wegener, brother-in-law Marc Wegener, niece Chelsea Costanzo, nephew Jason Costanzo, his wife Caitlin Costanzo, and great-nephew Vincent Costanzo.
Born on January 10, 1956, Garry was a proud resident of Latham and lived a life full of challenge, purpose, and determination. In his younger years, Garry was known for his vibrant energy and love of adventure. However, as a young adult his life was forever changed after a motorcycle accident left him paralyzed and in a wheelchair. Despite the physical challenges he faced, Garry never allowed his circumstances to define him.
Garry would persevere to obtain a college degree from SUNY Albany. He enjoyed a career with the New York State Department of Health for over thirty years, dedicating himself to serving the public. His family and friends fondly recall annual charity dinners for the Spinal Cord Society he would help host to raise awareness and funds for research and those in need. His philanthropic efforts brought him much due recognition and served to bring his family together to share in their pride for their son, brother, and uncle.
In addition to his professional achievements, Garry had a passion for his beloved cats, wrist watches, music, and (we must mention-) Owls. He was an avid and dedicated sports fan, with a deep love for both the New York Giants and the New York Yankees. He spent many joyful holidays watching games and enjoying sports with family. His passion for his teams was matched only by his devotion to those he loved, always offering encouragement and support in whatever way he could. Garry's generosity and compassion will be truly missed by all who knew him.
In honor of Garry's wishes, a Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday June 7, 2025 at New Comer Cremations and Funerals. Details to be announced. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Spinal Cord Society in Garry's memory. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.
