Loudonville - Frederick “Fred” Miller, 86, passed away peacefully at home on September 29, 2025, after a long illness, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, creativity, and service.

A lifelong resident of the Capital Region, Fred graduated from Averill Park High School in 1957. After earning his degree from Sage College, he spent a year teaching at Albany High School before returning to school to pursue a law degree at Siena College. His legal career spanned decades within the New York State court system, where he steadily rose through the ranks to become Director of the Lawyers’ Client Protection Fund—a program he helped create. The fund was designed to protect clients who suffered losses due to dishonest attorneys, providing restitution throughout the United States and Nova Scotia.

Following his retirement from state service, Fred opened a private law practice. He later devoted his time and legal expertise to supporting regional historic preservation sites, including Historic Cherry Hill, The Shaker Heritage Society, The Pryn House, and Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Beyond his legal work, Fred became a talented artisan, demonstrating and teaching Shaker broom making, basket weaving, chair seat weaving, and crafting traditional oval boxes. In his later years, he found great joy in pottery—first at the wheel, then through hand building and sculpting.

Fred shared many adventures with his long-time companion, Alfred “Chuck” Tiley. Together they traveled the world, often taking winter trips to Florida and the Caribbean, and journeying across the United States in their motorhome—always accompanied by their cherished dogs. Fred also loved spending time at his cabin on Queechy Lake, a place of peace and reflection.

Fred was predeceased by his father, Clarence Clowe Miller; his mother, Anne P. Miller; and his brothers Kenneth Devereaux (Sharlene), Charles Miller (Linda), and David Miller (Cheryl). He is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins; his longtime companion, Alfred C. “Chuck” Tiley; and loving like-grandchildren Steve Tiley (Jeanelle), Dan Tiley (Becky), Jaimee Kusche (Jon), and Conner Hale (Teagan).

Fred will be remembered for his sharp mind, kind spirit, craftsmanship, and the deep care he brought to every part of his life—from the courtroom to the pottery wheel.
