Guilderland- Frederick H. English, 77, passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2016 after a brief illness. He was born in Brooklyn on August 5, 1939.
Fred spent most of his work career as an iron worker rising through the ranks to become president of the Iron Worker's Local 12 in Albany, and retiring as business agent. Throughout his career he felt strongly about the bonds he made with fellow iron workers, and it was important him that he always be considered their best advocate when bargaining for fair wages and decent benefits. Fred also represented both his family and his union by working hard to raise funds for various charities, most notably his work on the Cerebral Palsy telethons for the Center for the Disabled.
When Fred wasn't playing golf or fishing, he could usually be found with a hammer in his hand helping family and friends with projects and taking care of those in need.
After retirement, Fred started spending his winters in Venice, Florida where he enjoyed golf, fishing, biking, and swimming. Fred was a people person with a quick Irish wit and a great smile. He always had people laughing.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife Louise English. He is also survived by his son, Fred; his grandson, Rick; his two sisters, Valerie M. Sutton and Barbara E. Doyle; and his many loving nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 18, 2016 from 4pm-7pm at New Comer Funeral Home, Colonie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Saturday at St. Madeleine-Sophie Church on Carman Rd, Guilderland. Interment will follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
