Filippo "Phillip" Maselli, 94, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at his home with loving family by his side. In his final moments, he looked lovingly into his wife’s eyes - a final expression of a lifetime of love. He passed peacefully surrounded by loving family, with his oldest son by his side, holding his hand. Filippo was born in Acquaviva di Frosolone, Italy, son of the late Donato & Elisa (Mainella) Maselli.
He is survived by his wife Josephine "Pina", his sons, Donato (Beth) Maselli and Claudio Maselli and his cherished grandson, Donato Jr., who held a very special place in his Nonno’s heart. Named after his father and his Nonno’s father, carrying on the family name, his grandson was a source of tremendous pride and happiness, and the continuation of the family name brought him deep joy.
He is also survived by his two sisters, Felicetta (the late John) Mainella, Pepinella (Egidio) Maselli and was predeceased by his brother, Domenico and sister, Angiolina. He deeply cherished his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews and his face would light up with the biggest smile whenever he saw them. He is also survived by cousins in the New York City area, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
He was a simple and hardworking man, he showed his love not always through words, but through his actions and a lifetime of unwavering dedication to his family, especially his wife of 61 years, Josephine "Pina" (Macchina) Maselli and sons, Donato and Claudio, always, always working hard to provide and care for his family.
He was an extraordinarily loyal & dedicated member of Bella Napoli Bakery, founded by his beloved sister & brother in law, working faithfully for nearly 60 years. His loyalty to the bakery was deeply tied to the love he had for his family, and even in his later years after suffering a stroke & living with dementia, the bakery remained close to his heart always.
Even throughout his journey with dementia, he never forgot his family. He always recognized and remembered his loved ones by name until the very end.
After immigrating from Italy, he built his life alongside family, first with his late brother in Burnaby, Vancouver British Colombia and later in Montreal with his sister and her family, and his family always remained at the center of his life. Though he was never much for traveling, the importance of family guided him, leading him to visit Vancouver & Montreal many times and even a special trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where his late sister and family lived.
He had a passion for horses, his Italian music which he was known to “batte le manine” and would lead to his love of dancing. He also enjoyed scratch-off lottery tickets, that brought him fun and anticipation. Among the simple Italian traditions he treasured was enjoying scattone, a simple dish of pasta with wine, a tradition from his hometown, that he faithfully enjoyed each and every day before dinner. It remained one of life’s small comforts and pleasures for him, and was fittingly, the last meal he enjoyed. He also made homemade wine for many years, a tradition he greatly enjoyed. A hardworking man by nature, he will most be remembered for his warm and welcoming smile, especially when meeting others. He treasured time with family, and found happiness in shared meals and family celebrations.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Samaritan Hospital for the care, compassion, and kindness they showed him throughout his recent hospital visits. A special thank you is also extended to his two devoted caregivers at home, whose loving, care, patience, and companionship brought comfort to him and his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 347 Old Loudon Rd., Latham, NY, on Monday June 1, 2026 at 9:00 am. Entombment will follow the Mass at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association (Northeastern New York Chapter) or St. Peter’s Health Partners Foundations to support dementia care and research in the Albany, New York area.
