ROTTERDAM - Erwin H. Splittgerber, Sr., 91, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at The Capital Living Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre, surrounded by his loving family.
Erwin was born on July 7, 1925 in Amsterdam, NY and was the son of the late John and Johanna (Baker) Splittgerber. He married Anneliese H. (Knight) in 1972, she passed away on January 6, 2017. He is survived by his sons, Erwin (Debra) Splittgerber, Jr. and Howard (Sally) Splittgerber; his daughters, Gloria (Mark) Jacobs and Martha Ledford; his step-daughters, Melissa (Jim) Keegan and Andrea (Kurt) Husselbeck; his siblings, Elaine (Fred) Decker, Dean (Hope) Splittgerber, Trudy (Kevin) Kelly, and Kathy Splittgerber; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; several cousins and many nieces and nephews.
Erwin worked for over 50 years as an automobile and motorcycle mechanic at Spitzie's Motorcycle Center in Colonie and was a motorcycle enthusiast and an avid rider for over 65 years. He was a life member of the American Motorcycle Association. Erwin was a member of the Cobblestone Reformed Church in Rotterdam where he served on the board for many years and he also was an Elder, Deacon and Home Chaplin. He also served as a Chaplin's Aide at Ellis Hospital for 12 years. He was also a volunteer dispatch rider for the Civil Defense during WWII.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 4th, at 2:00 p.m. at New Comer Funerals & Cremations, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie. Calling hours will precede the service from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will be held in the spring at Viewland Cemetery, Rotterdam.
