LATHAM - Edward Schmidt, 78, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Born and raised in the Bronx, Ed dedicated his career to public service as a civil engineer for New York State, where his hard work and commitment left a lasting impact on the state.
Ed was calm-natured and kind, with a steady presence that made those around him feel at ease. He was a leisure golfer, a skilled photographer, and a passionate traveler who especially enjoyed exploring locally with his beloved wife, Jayne Schmidt, to whom he was married for almost 54 years. Ed also found joy in playing chess and building intricate train sets with fine detail—a reflection of his precision and creativity.
Despite his Parkinson’s, Ed never complained and instead chose to focus on spending time with his loved ones, finding happiness in the simple moments that mattered most.
Family was always at the heart of Ed’s life. He cherished vacations, holidays, and everyday moments with his children, Karen Canniff (Ryan Canniff) and Paul Schmidt (Ashton Dorsett), and adored his grandchildren, Caelyn Canniff, Brynlee Canniff, and Hattie Schmidt, who brought him endless joy and pride. He is also survived by his brothers, Ronald Schmidt and Kenneth Schmidt, with whom he shared fond memories of their childhood, including trips to Keansburg, New Jersey, and a love for doo-wop music, as well as many extended family members and friends who will remember his warmth, wit, and kindness.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 17, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm with a celebration of Ed’s Life to immediately follow at 12:00 pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet. Committal services will follow at Memory Gardens.
