GUILDERLAND – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edmund “Ed” H. Hanley on Friday, October 10, 2025, at the age of 91 just a few weeks short of his 92nd birthday.
Ed was born in Albany, NY and was the son of the late James and Catherine Hanley.
Ed was a resident of Church Road for the majority of his life, attending lessons in the Little Red Schoolhouse that once was on the corner of Schoolhouse Road and Western Avenue. Always a motivated worker, as a young boy he picked farm vegetables did local landscaping jobs, and later would ride his bike to caddie at the Albany Country Club Golf Course. When he was able to enlist, he proudly served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1956 to 1958, helping to secure the peace following the armistice. After the war, he joined the Teamsters Local Union #294 as a truck driver working for August Bohl Trucking until his retirement in 1995.
Ed enjoyed camping with his family and dear friends, visiting Cape Cod, attending auctions, collecting lanterns, woodworking, landscaping and mowing with his lawn tractor. It was difficult not to be captivated by his bright blue eyes, charming smile, quick wit, and funny stories and jokes. One of his favorite pranks was to bring home dump loads of topsoil and stone so his children could practice shoveling them around the yard and long driveway on their school breaks.
The passing of Ed truly marks the end of an era for the Hanley family. He was the final guardian of his family's story, holding countless memories of growing up with his ten siblings, surpassing them all in longevity. The stories and memories of a cherished generation are now in the hands of those who follow.
Edmund is predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years Barbara Hanley (nee Ostrander). Son Timothy. Brothers James, Eugene, William, Joseph, Gerald, Laurence, Paul, Alfred Hanley. Sisters Catherine Rivenburg and Joan Nowak.
Edmund is survived by his children Michael (Linda) and Teresa. Grandchildren, Melissa (Davon) and Olivia. great grandchildren, MJ, Angela, Skylah, Davon and Karter. Survived by a host of nieces and nephews. Ed’s family would like to thank the staff at the Delmar Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, and to his very dedicated home health aides Omosede “O”, Mrs. Debra, Joicy and Daniela.
