Dr. Carlos Alberto Castro

1942 — 2025

Albany

Dr. Carlos Alberto Castro passed away peacefully in his Albany home on May 17th, in the company of his wife of 47 years, Eloise Castro. Born in Bogota, Colombia in 1942, he persevered in the face of challenging life circumstances to become a highly regarded cardiothoracic surgeon in the Capital region, where he practiced medicine for over 30 years. An immigrant with unwavering faith in the American dream and the value of hard work, he was a proud American citizen who served his country.

After graduating from Universidad Nacional de Colombia with a degree in Medicine in 1968, he completed a year of compulsory service with the Colombian military, stationed in the Amazon as a military surgeon. Following this, he pursued advanced surgical training in the U.S. while serving in the Air Force, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

An omnivorous reader with a love of puns and wordplay, which he shared abundantly with his family and friends, he also enjoyed watching soccer – a game he played seriously in his youth. After his retirement in 2017 he enjoyed a life of simple pleasures and quiet reflection, taking long walks at the Crossings, enjoying the company of his wife and life partner, staying close with his siblings, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife, Eloise; his siblings Alvaro (Blanca Felica) and Hilda (Arnulfo) – his sister Nelcira pre-deceased him; his children, Jason (Lisa), Carla (John), Eliana, and Lyda; and his cherished grandchildren, Joelle, Charlie, Carlitos, Vivi, and Adriana.

Visiting hours will be held on June 13, 2025 at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Rd., Watervliet from 10:30-11:30 AM.
